Arun
and Charan Bowl Vedic to a Win
When Vedic Naturals were 58 / 0 after 4 overs and Silent Assassins
were being blown apart by a Cristy hurricane, it was hard to fathom that this
would be a morning for the bowlers. Cristy, an opener with a no-fuss technique,
who believes in hitting the ball hard, straight and aerial rather than gliding
it into gaps like so many other lefties, was at his savage best.
Cristy
Hurricane
Cristy was the Josh Talks Impact Performer of the Day |
The medium pace bowling was served to order ,and the feast began
in the 2nd over as Cristy cover drove a full delivery from medium
pacer Rahul for a boundary, before slamming back a straight drive way over the
rope next ball. Akhil was launched for 2 straight sixes next over, and from the
other end Rahul was once again
dispatched for successive boundaries and a six. At that point it seemed like
Silent Assassins were going to spend the morning at the mercy of Cristy’s
blade, but credit to Akhil for holding his nerve (and line-length) and turning
the game in the space of four balls.
Cristy
Dismissal Starts a Slide
He removed both openers caught at mid off in the 5th over.
First it was Akash, then the big wicket of Cristy (43 from 18 balls). The
double blow lifted the fielding side, and Rahul responded immediately, sending
down a maiden. At 61 / 2 after 6, Silent Assassins were the happier of the two
sides. NP Singh was next to be dismissed, caught by Jatin at fine leg off the
bowling of off-spinner Rakesh. Prateek and Jatin himself from the other were
bowling with tight control and great energy in tandem. Jatin, particularly,
looked in excellent rhythm, landing his medium pace at a perfect spot just
short of a driving length. Runs dried out, and Shwet was run out off a suicidal
single in the 11th, leaving Vedic in a relatively tough spot at 88 /
4.
Jatin Lands
Vedic in Trouble With 3 Wickets in an Over
Jatin (l) wrecked the Vedic middle-order in one over |
If Vedic Naturals hoped for a late revival, Jatin smothered the
expectation in the 12th by sending down the over of his life. He
took out Sachin, Charan and Arun in the space of four balls – the first two
clean bowled. At 92 / 7, the batting side were in tatters. Runs were no longer
the priority. Confronted with some disciplined bowling and with survival on
their mind, Hardik and Harsh put on a slow and painful partnership of 31 runs
in 6 overs. Left arm spinner Mrityunjay, bowling at the death, conceded a
meager 18 from his 4 overs. When Harsh was dismissed, caught by Kanwar off
Rahul on the stroke of the 18th over, the score read only 123.
Anurag, thankfully for Vedic Naturals, picked up a couple of
boundaries, and launched two big straight hits for six in the last over to lift
the total to a somewhat respectable yet below par 146 / 8. After Cristy’s
dismissal, Vedic had got only 88 in their last fifteen.
Silent
Assassins Collapse to Defeat
Arun bowled the spell of the tournament |
Silent Assassins, however, were pushed back by a total top order
collapse and they never managed to threaten the Vedic Naturals total. Rahul,
Rohan and Mrityunjay were all snared up by Arun in the first 7 deliveries, and
Rishab was run out at the other end to leave the side tottering at 15 / 4 in
the 3rd over. Bad became worse, and the team finally folded up for
97 in the 18th over. Arun, who hits the deck off a tight length and
moves the ball subtly both ways, delivered the spell of the tournament, ending
with figures of 2.1 – 0 – 9 – 4 and the MoM award. He was able supported by
Charan, who picked up 3/21 from his four.
Jatin was the Best Performer for Silent Assassins for his
excellent figures of 4 – 0 – 20 – 3, and Cristy, the only batsman who had made
an impact on the day, walked away with the Josh Talks Impact Performer Award.
